It can be cured by a simple cataract extraction microsurgery, which, these days is performed using advanced technology in a short time.

  • What is cataract?

The eye contains a natural lens, which is crystal clear. Light passes through this clear lens and is focused on the retina, at the back of the eye and is experienced as vision. Any clouding/haziness of the eye's lens is called cataract. This worsens focusing of light on the retina and causes blurring of vision.

  • What are the causes of cataract?

Ageing is the most common cause of cataract. Every person gets it sooner or later, especially people over 60yrs of age. Other causes include diabetes, injury, usage of certain medications, and secondary to other eye diseases such as uveitis and glaucoma. Cataracts can occur early in diabetes, myopia (short sight) and as a hereditary predisposition.

  • What are the symptoms of cataract?
    • Painless, gradually progressive blurring of vision
    • Double vision or seeing multiple images
    • Trouble with seeing in poor light conditions and sometimes in excessive sunlight Becoming sensitive to glare, making night driving difficult
    • Difficulty in distance vision and in reading
  • Are there any eye drops or tablets to prevent or cure cataract?

There are no medicines with proven efficacy to prevent to treat cataract. The only effective treatment is surgical removal of the cataract - cataract surgery.

  • Can surgery be done if diabetes or hypertension is present?

People with diabetes and hypertension can undergo cataract surgery with these conditions being kept under control.

  • When to treat?

We need not wait for the cataract to be fully mature ( ripe) to do the surgery. Any obstruction to the patient's vision, either in reading , driving or day to day activities is an indication of cataract surgery.

  • How is cataract surgery done? How long does it take?

Modern day cataract surgery is a simple, sutureless, Day care patient procedure done in the operation theatre using microsurgery. The cataract is removed and is replaced with an intraocular lens (IOL) , which enables the patient to see after surgery. Various materials of IOL are available today like rigid, foldable, multifocal etc.

  • When to go for Cataract removal ?

Cataract should be removed as soon as it begins to affect daily activities. With any of the above mentioned symptoms setting in, it is the right time to go for Cataract removal. DO NOT WAIT FOR THE CATARACT TO GET MATURE as unnecessary delay can lead to avoidable complications and more difficult surgery. Cataract surgery can be undertaken successfully in any season. Summer or rainy season have absolutely no effect on the outcome of the cataract surgery.

  • What is the recommended treatment for cataract ?

With phacoemulsification and implantation of foldable Intra Ocular Lens (IOL), treatment of cataract has become very simple and sophisticated. The procedure is safe, accurate and leads to rapid recovery. Thus phacoemulsification with foldable lens implant is the most recommended treatment for cataract.
